Dear UF, NIH, Alumni, Benefactors and Florida politicians (The Gator Caucus) – Is your money contributing to more than you intended?
A UF insider states, ”Protocol numbers are internal tracking IDs used to refer to a particular study method. It’s a lot easier to refer to “Protocol TG6452S” than it is to it, “that study where we fast a male macaque for 24 hrs, sedate it using drug x, take it to another room where we administer this and that drug and do these specific terrible things and then return it to its cage.”
Then what could possibly be the explanation for Dennis E Brooks and Shauna Cantwell switching protocols for little Harry’s torture back and forth 5 times while Harry was imprisoned? This seems to be the case with all of Brooks’ victims who have been exposed so far. If the PI writes the protocol then obtains the money, could he manipulate the funds needed, murder the animals and keep collecting funds? If the PI uses “already defined protocols”, is he taking money to repeat a study that already received government money?
UF insider:“Funding for care and housing is often assigned to each protocol by the researcher, so if an animal is no longer being used, yet is assigned to a particular study/protocol, those costs are an unnecessary drain on that protocol’s fund. If they cannot find another study (or more funding for the current one) or they cannot find another researcher who would like to take and use the animal in their own research, then they will destroy it to save money.”
Or, could they murder the animal early on and keep drawing from the funding? How hard would that be if the PI also used already defined protocols claiming there was no change in the outcome from the original study when the animal was long dead and the money spent?
Animal torture at the University of Florida may be motivated by more than sadism and profit. Misappropriation of government and private funding seems easy enough- maybe money attained this way, blood money, is the real reason UF is unwilling to ban primate experimentation.
